Roles of a Performer

Regardless of the medium, a performer presents his work for others to see, hoping for a good show and positive responses. But the actual performances are just part of the story. The performer assumes a variety of roles to support his work and keep the interests of fans.

Actor

An actor may wear many hats, both literally and figuratively. He may appear in a variety of productions, small and large, in theater, television or movies, in drama, comedy and other genres. Many working actors also have a regular job for a steady income and health insurance, so their days may be very full, with auditions, networking, marketing and performances added to regular working hours. Acting jobs may not be limited to stage and screen; actors may dress up in costume to perform at carnivals and fairs, for example.

Singer/Musician

Interest and talent in music can lead to a career as a singer or musician, or a combination of the two, either as a solo artist or part of a musical group, performing original music or songs written by other composers. In addition to recording CDs and digital downloads, she will need to create and maintain public interest through frequent performances and appearances. Additional marketing could include an official website, social media sites, fliers, networking and merchandising.

Comedian

With comedy clubs regularly offering open mikes, competition is fierce among budding comedians who are honing their craft. As they rise in their careers and start getting booked at clubs, colleges and event centers, they will likely do much of their own promotional work, perhaps signing with a booking agency as well. They will likely make multiple, often unpaid, appearances at different sites to maximize exposure. Online videos may also help. As comedians make more of a name for themselves, they can travel to different cities for performances and eventually support themselves through their comedy.

Dancer

Dance includes a wide variety of styles, from modern dance to ballet to hip-hop. A dancer's work is very physical, so it's important for her to be healthy and physically fit. A ballet dancer may work with a company that puts on multiple performances on stage, while a Middle Eastern dancer or belly dancer may be part of a troupe that travels to events. A dancer may also perform in videos and television shows.
